Chelsea ‘seriously considering’ Diogo Costa

From the moment Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa stepped up to save his third consecutive penalty in his country’s round of 16 shootout against Slovenia on Monday night, we knew it was coming.

Chelsea have been linked with a number of goalkeepers this summer, with Costa topping the list in terms of current ability (and price, most likely). So, as soon as he hit the headlines, it seemed inevitable that those rumours would be sparked again soon after.

In this case, it is sources in Spain who are leading the way, with transfer news site Fichajes claiming that the Blues are “already seriously considering” signing Portugal and Porto’s number one goalkeeper.

It won’t be easy, and it might not even be possible. He has three years left on his contract with Porto, his agent is Jorge Mendes, and there are plenty of top teams interested, especially after Monday night’s exploits. You’d expect a record fee for a goalkeeper, or something close to it. But many would argue that it’s worth it for a 24-year-old who can still improve, and who could end up being your first-choice keeper for ten years or more if all goes well.

Sanchez will remain in goal

These links of course contradict rumours from the last 24 hours, as reported by our reporter Simon Phillips, that Chelsea are considering letting Robert Sanchez become first choice again and see how he fares under Enzo Maresca.

We can only see this going terribly wrong, and given how much we have suffered from not having a top goalkeeper in recent years, we are praying that the club break the bank and go for someone top class like Costa.
