BBC: Spurs could offer Djed Spence to other clubs after Genoa talks fail

Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence enjoyed a lucrative loan spell at Genoa last season, enough for the Serie A club to want to keep him permanently. But the two clubs have been locked in negotiations for weeks without any breakthrough, with Genoa unwilling to pay Spurs’ asking price for Spence.

Now, according to Nizaar Kinsella writing for the BBC, negotiations have broken down and Spurs are prepared to offer Spence to other interested clubs.

I don’t know how much Spurs were asking for Spence, but it can’t be that much. That said, Genoa aren’t exactly known for being a rich club, so it could well be that the league fee Spurs are expecting is out of their financial reach. Tottenham could consider a deal to let Djed go, but they’re not willing to lose his shirt, so it makes sense to test the waters elsewhere.

There is really no chance that Spence, whose Tottenham contract expires in 2027, will make an impact under Ange Postecoglou. That long-term contract weighs like an anchor on him, and I can see another scenario where Spence leaves on loan for the season. I suppose we will find out – Kinsella suggests that if Spurs can’t find him a good club, they could return to Genoa later in the window.
