Mail thief on plantation caught on camera – NBC 6 South Florida

A suspected thief was caught on camera stealing mail from a Plantation subdivision, but how he obtained a key to enter the mail room remains a mystery.

Nick Hamp, president of The Cove at Largo Mar homeowners association, said early Wednesday morning someone was able to use a code to enter their gated community.

Surveillance video provided to NBC6 then showed the suspect parking and walking toward the mail room. Hamp said the suspect had a key to open a box that contained another key to enter the mail room.

Hamp said the key the person used to open the box was the same key used to open all mailboxes. Surveillance video then showed the suspect painting the surveillance camera, but it didn’t work.

“He thought he sprayed well enough that there wasn’t any footage of him,” Hamp said.

The camera has a special lens that allows the paint to slide off, Hamp explained. The suspect is then seen pulling out a black bag, opening mailboxes and stealing everyone’s mail.

“We see it on the news all the time and we say it’s not going to happen to us, but it did,” Hamp said. “He knew what he was doing, he brought his trash bag with him, loaded everything up, we saw him take everything out of every box.”

Plantation police are investigating. Hamp said he is confident police will find the suspect.

“He thought he got away with something, well we got his car and we caught him on video, you saw the video and he’ll be caught,” Hamp said.

NBC6 contacted the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Miami Division.
