White House says Biden has ‘absolutely no’ plans to resign

A new CBS News/YouGov poll of the nation and seven key states finds the picture of the presidential race is largely unchanged nationally after Thursday’s debate, with 50% of likely voters nationally backing Donald Trump, 48% backing Joe Biden, about the same as in the CBS pre-debate poll.

In the key states, 51% of voters support Trump and 48% support Biden. CBS did not provide a breakdown of state-by-state results in the key states, which include Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

About seven in ten registered voters in this poll say Biden should not run (69%, down slightly from 72% who said so in a CBS poll released over the weekend), including 41% of Democrats (down slightly from 46% who said so in the June 28-29 poll) and 78% of independents (down from 82% in the previous post-debate poll).

Republicans surveyed in the poll are more likely to say they will definitely vote in this year’s presidential election than Democrats (90% of registered Republican voters nationally say so, compared to 81% of Democrats), and CBS reports that the divide is similar in battleground states.

Nationally, more respondents say Trump is energetic (65%), effective (51%) and competent (48%) than say the same about Biden (18% energetic, 40% effective, 39% competent). And 69% say Biden’s age is a factor in their vote, compared with 48% who say Trump’s age is a factor.

Overall, 53% of voters say Thursday’s presidential debate made them think worse of Biden, including 61% of independents and 28% of Democrats. Just 9% of voters said the debate made them think better of Biden, and 38% said it made no difference. For Trump, 27% said the debate made them think worse of him, 25% said it made them think better of him, and 48% said it made no difference.

More information about the survey:The poll was conducted online among a random national sample of 2,836 registered voters from June 28 to July 2 and has a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points for national results and 4.4 percentage points for results in key states.
