Beshear, other Democratic governors meet with President Biden

(WTVQ) — President Joe Biden met with Democratic governors at the White House Wednesday night, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

The meeting comes amid growing pressure after what many say was Biden’s poor performance in last week’s debate against Donald Trump.

Beshear discussed the debate on CNN’s “The Situation Room” Tuesday night.

“I think we all have to be frank and honest about the fact that what we saw in the debate was tough,” Beshear said. “It was a tough night and regardless of the polls, it’s going to hurt the campaign.”

Beshear also said he wanted to check in on the president’s status, as did many other Democratic governors.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with asking the president to talk to the American people a little bit more about his health or his performance in the debate,” Biden said. “It’s like seeing someone you haven’t seen in a while who seems a little bit upset, and you ask them how they’re doing and then listen to their answer, which shows that you care about them, but also that you’re just trying to make sure that everything’s OK.”

The governor also addressed rumors that he could be on the short list to potentially replace Biden, should he decide to step down.

“It’s flattering to me to hear that, but I think it’s mostly because of the good things that are happening in Kentucky,” Beshear said. “We’ve turned down the heat. Democrats and Republicans are working together. We’ve had record job growth, record exports, record tourism.”

Meanwhile, Texas Congressman Lloyd Doggett became the first Democratic lawmaker to publicly call on Biden to withdraw from the Democratic presidential nomination in November following last week’s debate debacle.

As the White House continues to try to contain the damage, former President Donald Trump is counting on a victory in the New York courts. Trump’s conviction on campaign bribery charges was postponed after the Supreme Court ruled on presidential immunity.
