Aldermen consider request for bike rack on town square

By Drew Layton, RM Staff

The Perryville City Council met Tuesday, June 18, to discuss several items, including a bike rack on the square.

According to Perryville City Administrator Brent Buerck, a request was made to install or relocate a bike rack near Villainous Grounds Comics, Coffee and More due to an excessive number of bikes being left on the sidewalk in front of the store. There was concern that bikes were being tied to objects in front of the store, creating a hazard for those trying to pass by or enter the store.

Buerck noted there was discussion about whether the city should move an existing bike rack in the immediate vicinity of Villainous Grounds or install a new one.

“We decided to go ahead and get a new one for that area of the plaza,” Buerck said. “We had considered moving the Eagle Scout Project bike rack in front of Enterprise Bank, but we just decided to go ahead and start the process of getting a new rack.”

It is not yet known when the new bike rack will be added to the square.

The City Council passed a bill accepting utility easements from residents and Perry County School District No. 32 for an ongoing water main improvement project.

Each year, Perryville’s Public Works Department budgets to improve the city’s water infrastructure. For this year’s project, the city partnered with Horner & Schifrin of St. Louis and Baer Engineering to replace Ward 1’s aging four-inch cast iron water main.

According to Public Works Director Jeff Layton, replacing the undersized main will improve fire flow to 14 hydrants in the area, which serve residential homes.

“By doing this, the quality and reliability of water in this residential area will be improved,” Layton said. “The city has budgeted for years to expand and replace old water lines and will continue to do so as the city grows and expands.”

The old four-inch cast iron water mains are currently undersized and could cause potential ruptures and restrict water flow throughout the city.

Other items discussed at the city council meeting included the renaming of McDonald’s Court to St. Catherine Laboure Court, an update on the pool leak at Perry Park Center, and other reports and items on the consent agenda.
