Joe Biden ‘seriously considering’ quitting US presidential race

Campaign staff are also preparing for the release of the latest New York Times/Siena poll, one of the most influential studies, later Wednesday.

“We’re going to see some polling coming out today and we want you all to hear what we know internally and what we expect externally,” the memo said, according to Politico.

“Polls are a snapshot of the situation and we should all expect them to continue to fluctuate. It will take weeks, not days, to get a full picture of the race.”

Republicans have launched attack ads highlighting Biden’s debate performance, during which he stuttered and forgot his lines. At one point, he completely froze.

The US president has since blamed his busy schedule ahead of the event, during which he crossed the Atlantic twice to attend D-Day commemorations in France and the G7 summit in Italy. He flew directly from Italy to Los Angeles for a fundraiser, crossing nine time zones.

At an event in Virginia on Tuesday, he told donors that he had “not been very smart” about organizing his schedule and had “fallen asleep on stage.”

He said: “This is not an excuse, but an explanation.”

The president is also trying to shore up support among incumbent Democrats, who fear that concerns about his age could cost them seats in the November general election.

On Wednesday night, he will meet with Democratic governors at the White House to discuss the campaign, after being criticized for being too slow to contact key party figures.
