People are shocked by the quality of horror on the new free UK streaming service

When it comes to a new streaming service, many people will have varying criteria for what makes it great.

For some, it’s about having great originals like The Mandalorian Or Strange things.

For others, it will be the number of great classics you own, whether they are TV series such as Break the bad or movies like Moonlight.

In case anyone thought that's what I was saying, there is no Breaking Bad.

For many, the value of a streaming service is measured precisely by the number of horror movies it offers that are so disgusting that you’d kill a Victorian child if you showed them one.

Good news then for British horror fans – because the library of a new, completely free streaming service could easily attract crowds of Victorian children.

The service in question is Tubi, a free Netflix competitor that launched in the UK just this week.

While the streamer has been around in the US for a few years now, the Rupert Murdoch-backed service has now hit the UK.

Fans noticed the vast horror library on display and decided to spread the word.

A horror fan named Jack posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) to say: “UK horror fans, Tubi has just launched here and I am genuinely shocked at how awesome their catalogue is!

“From classics to cult books to great horror movies, there’s something for everyone! And it’s FREE!!!”

This may be news to those of us in the UK, but American fans have been singing the praises of Tubi’s horror section for years.

Earlier this year, it was announced that by May 2024, Tubi would have more viewers than Disney+, Peacock, Max, and Paramount+.

A horror movie fan tweeted this to say: “Because any self-respecting indie and horror fan (smart people) knows that Tubi has the best selection.”

Another fan was even more direct in his assessment, tweeting:

“Tubi is THAT bitch and always will be. Every horror fan is fueled by Tubi.”

One fan took his claims even further, stating, “Tubi is the best streaming service for horror movies and it’s free.”

Tubi’s UK selection may be more limited than Netflix’s, but it’s undeniably brilliant.

On the one hand, it contains the 1992 version of Candyman – a cult classic that has inspired many horror films over the last 30 years.

A post on r/horror discussing the film on Reddit received a comment saying, “This movie really scares me. As a 43 year old horror fan, I can’t say that about many people… but this one does.”

Add to that underrated hits like Happy Day of the Dead and the film that dominated online discussions when it was releasedWinnie the Pooh: Blood and Honeyand you have the makings of a great horror section.
