“She was completely out of control”

The nurse and mother of five says the parents of an unruly child were unable to stop him from repeating the offensive behaviour a second and third time.

A plane passenger found support on TikTok after opening up about a surprisingly wet flight.

In a video posted to the platform on Monday, June 17, Shayla Monnier describes an incident that occurred during a trip from Atlanta to Denver, during which a child seated in the row in front of her turned around and blew a raspberry at her, causing spit to land “all over” her face and her husband’s arm.

She estimates the girl was between 3 and 5 years old, an age she considers “old enough to understand that you don’t do that.”

“I was a little shocked,” says Monnier, who is herself a mother of five and a nurse.

According to Monnier, the child’s parents told her not to do it again, but she “fought against them.” It wasn’t long before she turned around in her seat and did it a second time.

“This time I put my hand up just to protect myself from the spit, and her parents kind of grabbed her and sat her down, but she struggled,” Monnier said, noting that the child was in the middle seat, flanked by her mother and father.

Monnier recounts that the unruly child then turned around a third time and “the spittle sprayed everywhere.”

In a second video recounting the incident, Monnier asks: “Is everyone really gentle with their kids these days? Because I’m not the type to do that. Not if you spit in my face.”

She admits the incident: “My husband lost his temper.”

“The first time she did it, we were both shocked,” she said. “And the parents acted like they cared, but I’m not really sure they did, because it wouldn’t have happened a second or third time.”

“After the third time, my husband told the parents very sternly: ‘If you can’t control your child, I will do it for you,'” she adds.

Since both parents were wearing masks, Monnier said her husband suggested the child wear one.

“Then the mother yelled at him and said, ‘If you had children, maybe you would understand,’ to which my husband replied, ‘We have five children and six grandchildren and I promise you that none of them would do something like this,’” Monnier recalled.

Monnier says a flight attendant then heard the commotion and asked the child’s parents to put a mask on him.

She notes that changing seats was not an option since the flight was full and no one within five rows would have agreed to swap seats since the spitting incident “caused such a spectacle.”

Monnier said that if the flight attendant had not intervened, her next move would have been to hold a clip to block the spit.

She notes that the child had slept the entire flight until the incident, so she was not simply restless because of the long journey.

Many TikTok users praised Monnier and her husband, who was offered free flight credits by the crew member for overcoming the stressful situation, for how they handled the situation.

“I 100% agree with how you and your husband reacted!” one person wrote.

“People need to understand that gentle parenting is NOT a form of permissiveness,” another comment read. “Gentle parenting does not mean you let your child behave inappropriately!!!”

“Parents are horrible now – kindness is a failure,” another commenter said. “Your choices are brilliant. You’re right!”

PEOPLE spoke with travel expert, writer and Fora Travel advisor Nicole Campoy Jackson, who says the way Monnier and her husband reacted is “perfectly reasonable.”

“They talked to the parents and asked for help, but the child persisted,” Jackson adds. “They were frustrated and told the parents. At this point (if not before), I think one of the parents could have gotten up with the child and walked to the aisle, and then ideally, talked to the child about it and told them not to do it again before they went back to their seat.”

However, she says it is difficult to comment on the parents’ response without knowing their situation.

“These passengers explained everything to the flight attendant, who responded in kind, helping in the professional manner she was trained to do, asking the parents to put a mask on their child (especially since they were wearing a mask themselves) and apologizing to these passengers for their inconvenience,” she continued.

Jackson points out that traveling with children can be a learning opportunity.

“Traveling with kids is stressful, for sure,” she says. “But while we as parents can handle that situation at any time, traveling with kids involves teaching them how to travel, which means respecting the people around them.”
