Mississippi police officers rescue 18-wheeler driver minutes before vehicle catches fire

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) — Two Rankin County deputies rescued a truck driver minutes before the vehicle caught fire.

The incident happened Monday, July 1, shortly before 4:45 p.m. on Interstate 20. Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said the 18-wheeler left the road and crashed in a wooded area.

Two deputies, who worked in a nearby homicide unit, responded to the scene of the crash and were able to evacuate the driver minutes before the 18-wheeler caught fire from a fuel leak.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to a local hospital with serious back and hip injuries.

Bailey said both deputies will be recommended for a life-saving award.
