Why Jason Mraz Wanted His Friends to ‘Stop Voting’ for Him on ‘DWTS’

Jason Mraz made it to the very end of his season on “Dancing with the Stars” — but he didn’t want to.

During an appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast on Tuesday, the “I’m Yours” singer admitted to asking his friends to “stop voting” for him after realizing the dance competition would take over his entire life.

“After two or three weeks, I realized I was probably going to be here the whole time, and I was terrified, I had to cancel all my plans for the rest of the year, and I missed my cat terribly,” the 47-year-old said.

“I started telling my friends, ‘Stop voting for me!’” he recalls. “I thought the only way I was going to get off this show was if I didn’t get enough votes.”

At one point, Mraz — whose dance partner was Daniella Karagach — even told producers he was “fine” and ready to “go home.”

However, they told him that it was not up to them and that he would have to take care of it.

“The only thing I could do was ask my friends to vote for someone else,” he repeated.

Despite the fatigue of the competition, Mraz still finished second behind winner Xochitl Gomez.

“After I got to the very end, to the buzzer, I look back and laugh and think, ‘Well, maybe if I had really given it my all!’” he joked.

“So I would do it again if I could and I would do my best,” he added.

Although Mraz had mixed feelings about the show, he would definitely “go back” and do it again with a new perspective.

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but it was so much fun,” he said, noting that it was an “honor” to have been asked in the first place.

Mraz previously told Page Six that all of his success has been shaped by stepping outside of his comfort zone.

“I just left all the possibilities open,” he said of his decades-long career, which began long before he got his big break in 2001.

“I never thought I would end up on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ that’s for sure!” he told us with a laugh in October 2023.

The “I Won’t Give Up” singer stressed that dancing is just another way to showcase your creativity and push yourself. He encouraged other aspiring artists to be open to whatever comes their way.

“I would say put your artistic talent first and embrace it. And leave open the possibility of whatever scene (that) may become available to you,” he said.
