This Morning co-host Dermot O’Leary will host a brand new game show about staying as quiet as possible.

Silence is Golden is UKTV’s latest format, where the studio audience is given a whopping £250,000 and all they have to do to keep it is make no noise.

Every member of the audience will be equipped with a microphone, but all hell will break loose as 30 different groups, led by comedy captains including Katherine Ryan, emerge from the green room and attempt to coax a sound out of the unsuspecting crowd.

The more the audience laughs or makes noise, the more the prize pool will decrease, and if it reaches zero, it means that the artists can donate the money to charity.

The intriguing format is one of a number of new programmes commissioned by UKTV alongside Jimmy Carr’s Battle in the Box and Follow The Leader with Jamali Maddix.

Silence is Golden host Dermot said in a statement: “I’m really looking forward to seeing Silence is Golden. When a show like this falls into your hands you can’t believe your luck.”

“We look forward to having fun with the audience, our comedians and our diverse cast of regulars, all trying to make the audience laugh, gasp and giggle.”

TV presenter Richard Bacon’s Yes Yes Media company is behind the new series, and he added: “You know that feeling when you’re not allowed to laugh at a funeral? Well, that’s what it is: game show. And I applaud U&Dave for having the audacity to commission a show that will cost them a quarter of a million a week – if the audience plays better than us.”

It looks like Dermot is booked and busy throughout 2024 and 2025, having also recently announced a new Irish cooking and travel show for ITV.

In Dermot’s Taste of Ireland, the popular TV presenter will travel to the Emerald Isle to explore his mother and homeland through food and friendship.

The five-part series will see Dermot take a special gastronomic tour across Ireland to discover all of the country’s “best-kept delicious secrets”, according to a revealed synopsis.

“From traditional Irish stew and soda bread to fresh seafood and tinned hash browns, Dermot will travel the island to meet the chefs and locals who champion and celebrate Ireland’s culinary heritage,” he continues.

Dermot is already well versed in the world of gastronomy, having opened two fish-themed restaurants. The star’s tastes are also well known This morning’s viewersbecause he sometimes shares his favorite recipes with viewers of the daytime show.

Celebrating the upcoming show, which will air on ITV1 and ITVX in the future, Dermot said: “I can’t wait to embark on this journey, exploring two of my great loves, Ireland and food. The food scene in Ireland is so exciting and meeting the people and tasting the produce will be a real treat.”

“It’s exciting to see modern Ireland through the eyes of the second generation,” he continued, adding: “And (it’s exciting) to show that Irish cuisine is so much more than cabbage and stews… although all their cabbages and stews are excellent too!”

Silence is Golden will air on U&Dave and air on U next year,
