Daniel Ricciardo handed Formula 1 lifeline as unlikely option emerges for under-fire Australian amid fears he will be SACKED by RB

Daniel Ricciardo could be offered a third drive in Formula 1, with reports suggesting the underperforming Australian could be handed a ride next season.

Ricciardo, 34, was hoping to make a strong bid to return to Red Bull as Max Verstappen’s team-mate in 2025 after being brought in from the cold following his sacking from McLaren.

However, his performances in the first half of 2024 have not really convinced the leaders of the Austrian team, who have chosen to keep faith in the current number 2, Sergio Perez.

Ricciardo’s place at Red Bull’s junior team, RB, is therefore under threat. Helmut Marko has revealed that the board is keen to recruit young drivers. New Zealander Liam Lawson is expected to replace Ricciardo.

The Australian’s departure from RB would be a major blow to his F1 aspirations, with very few options available for the 2025 season.

But a path has opened up for Ricciardo: Williams, the small powerhouse of F1, is reportedly considering signing the Australian if it fails in its attempt to bring in Carlos Sainz.

American driver Logan Sargeant’s seat is expected to be available next year and team principal James Vowles has openly stated his desire to sign Sainz, who will leave Ferrari at the end of the season after being replaced by Lewis Hamilton.

But Williams are increasingly frustrated by Sainz’s reluctance to sign a contract, and respected F1 journalist Will Buxton says the impasse has opened the door for Ricciardo.

“His whole future is at stake right now,” he said.

“There are many rumours that he will leave that seat after the summer break. It is said that he could be in negotiations with Williams for their second seat next year alongside Alex Albon.

“Williams, from what we understand, are tired of waiting for Carlos Sainz to decide where he wants to go next year and may close that door on him.”
