Fourth of July parade, fireworks canceled in central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — Oh no! We literally expect our parades to be ruined by rain. That has led to a growing list of Independence Day cancellations.

Check the list below to see which events are rescheduled, postponed, or cancelled:

Bloomington July 4th Parade Canceled:

  • The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department has made the “difficult” decision to cancel the planned July 4th parade and the 9 a.m. performance by the Bloomington Community Band. “We share our community’s disappointment, but the safety of parade participants, spectators and our staff is our top priority,” said Julie Ramey, Community Relations Manager. “Please stay safe and enjoy Independence Day!”

Rushville fireworks postponed:

  • The Town of Rushville postponed its July 4 celebration to July 13 due to unexpected storms, safety concerns and high cost. “It would be impractical for the fireworks crew to spend hours setting up, only to have rain fall on them, potentially losing over $20,000 in fireworks that were funded entirely by donations from businesses, families and individuals,” said Kyle Gardener, Director of Special Projects. “Rescheduling the fireworks show is complex because these shows require professional installation and execution.” To read more about their detailed reasoning for the postponement, click here.

5th Annual Martinsville Independence Day Parade Cancelled:

  • The Indiana Spirit of ’45 has canceled its July 4th celebration due to heavy rain and lightning moving through the area. “Our parade committee and board of directors have canceled today’s parade for the safety of our volunteers, parade participants and members of our community,” said founder Bruce McKee. “I wish you a safe and wonderful July 4th.”
