Perth Airport improves accessibility with new sensory room
Perth Airport will create a sensory room within the T1 international terminal to support neurodivergent travellers, as part of its commitment “to foster an inclusive travel experience for all passengers”.

Perth Airport will create a sensory room within the T1 international terminal to support neurodivergent travellers. The project aims to provide a calming environment, with reduced noise levels and soft lighting.

Sensory Room Highlights and Key Inclusions:

  • Seating areas for small groups of travelers
  • Two private spaces
  • Sensory research accessories
  • Charging stations for devices
  • Small storage spaces
  • Upholstery fabrics and color treatments
  • Flight information display screen, allowing passengers to receive uninterrupted boarding updates

“We understand that travelling can be an extremely stressful situation, particularly for neurodivergent travellers,” said Kate Holsgrove, Commercial and Aviation Director at Perth Airport. “We recognised this and wanted to provide a space that would make the process easier. With a focus on removing barriers for neurodivergent people, the room will cater for all ages, with a focus on supporting decompression, in a busy airport environment. We undertook extensive consultation with our Access and Inclusion Advisory Group, which led to the development of a scaled room demonstration, including furniture, which was then made available to the group for testing and additional feedback. Perth Airport is committed to fostering an inclusive travel experience for all passengers and we believe this new sensory room is a great addition to our terminal.” The sensory room will offer a range of areas suitable for simultaneous use by different groups of travellers such as independent travellers, carers and families. There will be a private family room and a second private space, with further contained seating areas in place.
