Wolves defender Max Kilman isn’t the first to make the jump from non-League to the Premier League, but his story has an unexpected twist: he’s an England futsal international.

Futsal is a variation of football with five players on each side, but it is not a five-a-side game as we know it. There are no walls, throw-ins are used instead, and back passes are limited. The game is particularly popular in Brazil and Spain, the two highest-ranked teams in the world, where futsal has traditionally been used as a development tool for young footballers.

Kilman’s journey has been a little different, as Michael Skubala, the England futsal team’s head coach, explains. “Max didn’t play futsal in a football environment, he played futsal in a futsal environment,” he says. Sky Sports. “That is to say, he came out of the professional football system and was in the futsal system, trained by futsal coaches.

“His career is quite unique in England.”
