Chismosa, the sweet Aztec, is back in Great Lady M

It’s rare that the first horse someone claims to produce is a graded stakes winner, but that’s exactly what happened to Jaime Renella. His 4-year-old, home-bred horse Chimosa a product of this first claim, You can dream participates in the Great Lady M Stakes (G2) on July 6 at Los Alamitos Racetrack as a Grade 3 stakes winner who also won three additional prizes. She will face a Grade 1 winner Sweet Aztec but Chismosa is one of only two to finish ahead of Sweet Azteca.

Sweet Azteca, a 4-year-old girl raised in Kentucky Aztec pointed trained by Michael McCarthy, will likely be a heavy favorite in the Great Lady M over 6 furlongs, which has attracted 10 runners. She is coming off an excellent victory in the Beholder Mile Stakes (G1) on March 9 at Santa Anita Parkwhen she won Adare Manor later winner of the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park and Santa Margarita Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita.

After his first victory last fall at Churchill DownsSweet Azteca finished third behind Chismosa and Peppers in the Jan. 1 Las Flores Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. She has been sensational since then, winning an optional claiming race Feb. 2 by 12 lengths and triumphing over Adare Manor by three-quarters of a length.

Juan Hernandez is piloting Sweet Azteca for the first time, and they will start from position 4.

Chismosa, trained by Rafael DeLeon, is one of several winners Renella has bred from You Can Dream, a $20,000 claimed mare in 2010. A daughter of Walk to the Clubhouse Chismosa has earned more than $500,000, the most of any horse in the Great Lady M. She is coming off a win in the June 2 Desert Stormer Stakes at Santa Anita. In 2023, Chismosa finished second in the Great Lady M, losing by just a neck to Eda Tiago Pereira should start from position 3.

McCarthy also trains Three Witches a multiple graded race winner who will be ridden by Abel Cedillo from post 2. A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred filly In malice Three Witches won the Santa Monica Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita on Feb. 3. Her first graded victory came in the 2023 Princess Rooney Invitational Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park.

Peter Miller trains Papasruby a 4 year old Cal-bred girl Fractal Dad Daddysruby, who won the Dec. 26 La Brea Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. Ridden for the first time by Reylu Gutierrez and drawn from post 9, Daddysruby has five wins, a second, a third and a fourth in eight starts. Since La Brea, she finished third in the Feb. 18 Spring Fever Stakes at Santa Anita and second in the March 30 Matron Stakes at Oaklawn.
