The series focuses on cancel culture, with Douglas’ career on the line after he makes an ill-advised joke at a wedding.

In one episode, Garraway interviews Bonneville and Gillan – their alter egos Douglas and Madeline – about their programme Live At Six while they are on Good Morning Britain. Clips show the presenter desperately trying to keep talking to the cameras as Bonneville slips behind her sofa.

“As you can see, Hugh Bonneville, when we were trying to do other stuff like they do when they make movies and stuff, kept hiding behind the couch and jumping up and trying to talk me out of it,” she said. “It was hilarious!”

“I was so happy to do it!” Garraway added of her role.

This isn’t the first time Garraway has played herself on screen. In 2017, the presenter filmed a scene in the movie Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, in which she warned Good Morning Britain viewers of the arrival of a “Sharknado”, a tornado that had swept away sharks.

She met a tragic end when a shark crashed into the studio during a live broadcast and she was crushed and killed, along with fellow presenters Laura Tobin and Charlotte Hawkins.

That year, the star also appeared in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks, where she was seen covering the trial of Ste Hay for the murder of Amy Barnes.

She said she loved her appearance in the soap, posting on Twitter (now X) after filming: “A big thank you to the gang at @Hollyoaks for making filming my small role part of a big storyline for September – so much fun!!!”

Douglas is Cancelled starts at 9pm on ITV on June 27.
