Stop What You’re Doing, A Speedrunning Dog Just Won A NES Baseball Game By Hitting A Home Run At SGDQ 2024

In news that should make you smile no matter how bad of a day you’re having, a Shiba Inu named Peanut Butter won a game of Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB at this year’s Summer Games Done Quick. And with the help of his owner, the dog did it in pretty spectacular fashion.

If you’re not familiar with Peanut Butter, he’s the dog of speedrunner JSR_ and he’s become quite famous for playing NES games like Gyromite via a control scheme that seems to provide him with commands based on rewards provided by his human companion. It’s pretty cool.

At this year’s SGDQ, PB took it upon himself to play a bit of the 1994 NES classic Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball, with the goal of winning a game as Griffey’s Seattle Mariners – thereby accidentally providing a strange side note in the history of baseball’s most interesting team.

With the Minnesota Twins in the dugout, the dog endured a close game, losing by one run early on, only to start a comeback by scoring a tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning (look, you can stop and quickly Google the word baseball if you’re currently lost and want a better idea of what all this means), narrowly avoiding a softlock in the process.

Things eventually went into extra innings—baseball games only last nine innings unless the score is tied after all the balls have been bowled. Then, in the bottom of the twelfth inning, with the score tied at three runs and a runner on second base, PB stepped up to the plate as Ken Griffey Jr. himself and did what you can see in the clip below.

Yes, that was a home run that ended the game instantly, thanks to Griffey and the stranded runner scoring. 5-3 Mariners, ball game, and a win for the doggo. As you can see here, everyone in attendance went rightfully crazy.

“I’m so proud of this dog, man. This is the greatest moment of both our lives. What a dog,” JSR_ tweeted summarizing the night, and he’s not wrong, PB is fucking awesome.
