Surprise defeat for Ian Paisley in ‘political earthquake’

The DUP has suffered a series of disappointing election results in Northern Ireland, with the party suffering a seismic shock when Ian Paisley lost his seat in North Antrim.

In a difficult night for the Unionist Party, the Alliance Party’s Sorcha Eastwood also secured a historic result by triumphing in the DUP stronghold of Lagan Valley – the seat formerly held by party leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson.

There has been a “seismic political earthquake” in north Antrim, TUV leader Jim Allister said as he was elected MP for the constituency.
