Devon and Cornwall motorists caught driving dangerously

Police have received videos showing 676 instances of misconduct across Devon and Cornwall in a month, a force spokesman has said.

The footage was submitted to road safety initiative Operation Snap in May, and includes near misses on several roads and a van driving onto a busy pavement.

The operation aims to identify dangerous and illegal driving through video footage submitted by members of the public.

Adrian Leisk, Devon and Cornwall Police’s road safety manager, said: “We really hope that Operation Snap will act as a deterrent to that minority who think they will go undetected when driving horribly.”

“Incredibly bad driving”

Other captured clips show a truck swerving across highway lanes, vehicles overtaking cyclists too closely and a driver running a red light.

The most recent figures show that there were 150 more clips submitted than in May 2023.

Many drivers received penalty points and fines.

Mr Leisk stressed that the vast majority of road users in Devon and Cornwall were careful, respectful and considerate, but said a small minority continued to pose significant risks to others.

“We are very grateful to the hundreds of road users who send us footage every month, allowing us to hold this incredibly poor driving to account,” he said.

“By doing this, you are literally saving lives.”

Operation Snap accepts video clips from virtually any device such as cell phones and video doorbells, as well as motorcycle, bicycle and helmet cameras.
