Destination, Big 12: Ed White DB Joshua Patterson announces commitment to college football

Some people are shooting fireworks into the sky for the 4th of July. Joshua Patterson has activated the hurricane warning.

The latest member of a Jacksonville football family to find a home in college football, rising senior defensive back White committed to Iowa State via Instagram on Thursday.

Patterson, who stands 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, is considered a three-star recruit by ESPN, On3, Rivals and 247Sports, and ranks among the top 60 safeties in the country by Rivals and 247Sports. The USA TODAY Florida Network Top 100 ranked him No. 66 during the spring football campaign.

He selected Iowa State ahead of more than two dozen schools, with Wake Forest also among the top contenders. Patterson is the second Northeast Florida defensive player to be selected by the Cyclones in the past three weeks, following Middleburg defensive tackle B.J. Carter on June 17.

Last year with the Commanders, Patterson intercepted three passes, broke up four and forced a fumble, helping White qualify for the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 2M playoffs. He also played occasionally on offense, catching seven passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns.

He’s shown an eye for football for three seasons now, having intercepted one pass as a freshman and three more as a sophomore.

For the Patterson family, college football is nothing new. Two older brothers have also joined the defensive division: Jaison Patterson is entering his final season as a running back at Bowling Green, Davaughn Patterson also shined at White and is currently entering his sophomore season in the defensive secondary at Wake Forest.

White’s season begins Aug. 23 at home against Trinity Christian.
