Four teams that could meet in Euro Cup title match

Both the Euro and Copa America tournaments will enter the quarter-final stage on Friday, with each of the 16 remaining teams seeking not only to become continental champions, but also to represent their respective hemispheres in next year’s inter-federal championship.

The CONMEBOL-UEFA Champions Cup, also known as Finalissima, is a trophy competition contested between the winners of the Euro and the Copa America. The first edition was held in 1985, but the concept was later abandoned in 1992 before being revived in 2022.

Here are two teams from each continental tournament that have the clearest path to the 2025 “Finalissima.”

Argentina

The 2022 Finalissima champions beat then-Euro champions Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium before eventually lifting the World Cup in Qatar. After an easy group stage, Argentina look set to defend their Copa America title once again.

Especially with a healthy Lionel Messi, it’s hard to see any reason to doubt Argentina’s dominance – even in an expanded Copa America that saw the United States and Mexico crash out of the group stage.

Spain

Spain’s path to the Euro final is not an easy one: they must face hosts Germany in the quarter-finals, before facing either France or Portugal in the semi-finals if they qualify. But this version of the ‘Furia Roja’ had little trouble finding the back of the net, scoring four goals against tournament outsiders Georgia in the round of 16.

If they manage to reach the final, Spain are in a good position to win their fourth European title, their first since 2012.

Uruguay

After winning all three of their group stage matches with relative ease – including a physical and controversial 1-0 victory over the United States on Monday – Uruguay find themselves facing a tough opponent in the Copa America draw.

If they can beat a struggling Brazil to find their traditional identity, they will face an energetic Colombia or a fractious Panama in the semi-finals. But their final challenge will likely be to dethrone defending champions Argentina, a difficult task but one that is entirely achievable with players like Darwin Nunez and Federico Valverde.

Germany

The Euro 2018 hosts will be looking to become the first to win on home soil since France in 1984, but Germany will need to overcome a powerful Spanish attack on Friday to do so.

Germany have a powerful attack, scoring 10 goals in their last four games to get to this point. Possible opponents France or Portugal would not be easy opponents, but it is clear that the European champions are likely to come out of this draw.

Regardless of which country reigns on each continent, the 2025 “Finalissima” will inevitably see a major confrontation between the giants of the Eastern and Western hemispheres.
