Martha Stewart has hit back at the “harsh judgment” she received after posting photos of her newly decorated living room in her Maine home on Wednesday.

The 82-year-old TV personality, who recently looked radiant as she celebrated the 60th anniversary of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, revealed she was “surprised” by the negative comments left on her previous post.

Alongside a photo of the room, Stewart wrote on her personal Instagram page: “I rarely read all the comments that come after my post, but because I was so happy with the transformation of my Maine living room.

“I have read many comments and was surprised by the severity of the judgment displayed by many!!!”

She added: “My assistants from Maine and I spent three hours moving the old furniture and installing the new ones. We were thrilled that the pieces actually fit the room and were proportionate to the large size of the space.”

Martha added: “This was not a professional ‘decorator’ installation. This was an attempt to do a quick and efficient change. Making a house a home, or a room a beautiful living space, takes much longer than three hours.”

“Of course there will be color, plants, mirrors, a new rug or two and other art and objects. Stay tuned!!!!”

The star concluded by saying: “And by the way, the birds are chromolithographs by Carroll Tyson known as the ‘6Audubon of Maine’ – so beautiful!”

The living room area was decorated with a large cream-colored rug as well as off-white leather chairs and a sofa in the middle of the room.

A black bench with cream cushions and an ornate coffee table was placed near the wood-paneled fireplace.

Black-framed paintings lined the wall above the fireplace, while several windows allowed natural light to flood inside.

Her previous post included additional photos of the living room, as well as a second and third sitting area inside the spacious home.

In addition to the cream and black colors, wooden tables, chairs and other furniture were included inside the room, providing a rustic feel to the space.

“It was a big day of rearranging furniture in the three main lounges of Skylands,” Stewart wrote to his 2 million followers.

“We replaced the grey-blue upholstery in the living room with a creamy, pale butter yellow (all the yellow is from Lily Pond Lane which I sold two years ago!).”

The star added: “The library is much cozier now and the faux bois table is now the card table. I love the rustic yet elegant charm of this lovely 1925 home.”

While some fans complimented the interior design of the large space, other social media users shared opposing opinions.

“Yuck. Looks like a living room in a Marriott suite in 1987,” one wrote, while another added: “Looks old and stuffy.”

“I hate to say it…but I will. It doesn’t seem like there’s a single comfortable chair…the colors are so bland,” one wrote.

“It doesn’t look like a house, it looks more like the lobby of a men’s club. I guess if you’re happy with it, that’s all that matters.”

Another Instagram user shared: “This is not your best work. It’s empty like no soul is empty.”

“It’s pretty but bland. Add some color for joy and fun,” one wrote, while another wrote: “It doesn’t look warm and welcoming. It looks more like a furniture showroom than a home. It’s sad to see.”

However, others shared positive messages, with one fan saying: “This is so beautiful! Just perfect!”

“Haters gonna hate, I love this Skylands 2.0 rework, Edsel Ford would be proud,” wrote another.

“Can’t wait for @seenbysharkey to fill the room with flowers, well done!!! I love that you recycled from one iconic home to another.”
