New camera angle ends controversy over Suryakumar Yadav’s capture

New Delhi,UPDATED: July 4, 2024 2:18 PM IST

A new camera angle on Suryakumar Yadav’s spectacular catch in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa has put to rest all allegations of it being an ‘unfair catch’. Suryakumar in particular showed great presence of mind as he held on to a stunning catch at long-on to turn the tables in India’s favour in the final over of the thrilling final.

With 16 runs left to chase for victory on the last six balls, South Africa’s David Miller pulled a full toss from Hardik Pandya through the air towards long-on. However, the left-hander failed to reach the distance as the ball fell just inside the boundary to Suryakumar who managed to catch it safely.

The momentum seemed to carry the Indian player beyond the boundary but he showed great presence of mind to get rid of the ball at the right time as it fell outside the boundary. Suryakumar quickly jumped inside to grab the ball again and took one of the finest catches ever taken in the final of an ICC event. As a result, Miller had to return to the pavilion after scoring 21 (17) when his team still needed 16 to win off the last five balls.

After dismissing Miller, Pandya kept his cool and successfully defended 15 runs to help India win their second T20 World Cup by seven runs. However, after India’s win, several videos of Suryakumar’s catch from a certain angle emerged with little People suggest that the Indian star grazed the boundary cushions while she had the ball in her hands.

Recently, Another video of the wonderful catch has been making the rounds on social media from a different angle, which clarifies the controversy surrounding it. The video clearly shows the distance between Surkumar’s feet and the boundary during the entire act and further shows that the Indian fielder had no contact with the boundary pads during the catch.

Indian team receives warm welcome upon arrival

In the meantime, India arrived in New Delhi after their T20 World Cup triumph where they were welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a special meet and greet. The men in blue will then travel to Mumbai for an open-bus victory parade and will finally be felicitated at the Wankhede Stadium.
