Liverpudlian Jodie Comer has been making waves in the TV and film industry for a number of years now, but it was her role as Villanelle in the hit BBC series Killing Eve that really brought her to people’s attention.

After winning a BAFTA for Best Actress in 2019 for Killing Eve, the 31-year-old won an Emmy Award for the same role, and then another BAFTA in the Best Lead Actress category for her role in Channel 4 drama Help.

But before being cast as the evil assassin Villanelle, Jodie appeared in a number of popular series including Casualty, Doctor Foster and even the blockbuster film Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.

She has now expanded her portfolio to theatre with her role in the one-woman show Prima Facie, as well as to Hollywood with the big-screen films Free Guy, The End We Start From and The Bikeriders.

In 2009, 16-year-old Jodie starred as patient Ellie Jenkins in hospital drama Holby City.

Waterloo Road

Jodie then joined the cast of Waterloo Road in 2010, playing the role of Sarah Evans. However, her stint on the show was short-lived, with Jodie only appearing in one episode of season 6.

Justice

Jodie landed her first major role in 2011, playing the character Sharna Mulhearne in the BBC legal drama Justice.

Between 2013 and 2015, Jodie starred as Chloe Gemell in the E4 comedy My Big Fat Mad Diary. Jodie’s character, Chloe, was the best friend of lead star Rachel, played by actress Sharon Rooney.

Thirteen

Jodie then appeared in the BBC mini-series Thirteen in 2016, playing the lead role of Ivy Moxam, a girl who went missing at the age of just 13.

Rillington Place

Another major role for Jodie saw her appear in the 2016 drama Rillington Place, where she played the role of Beryl Evans, living under the same roof as a serial killer with her on-screen husband Tim Evans.

The White Princess

In contrast to her previous roles, Jodie played Elizabeth of York in the 2017 medieval drama The White Princess, based on Philippa Gregory’s 2013 novel.

Doctor Foster

Perhaps one of her best-known roles to date, Jodie starred alongside Suranne Jones and Bertie Carvel in the popular BBC drama Doctor Foster in 2017.

England is mine

Jodie played the role of Christine in the 2017 film England Is Mine, a film about Morrissey and his early life in the 1970s.

Jodie starred in the medieval film The Last Duel, released in 2021 after production was postponed during the pandemic. Based on a book by Eric Jager, Jodie plays Marguerite de Carrouges, the wife of Matt Damon’s character Jean de Carrouges, who takes part in the last legalized duel in France.

Help

In September 2021, Jodie joined fellow Liverpool actor Stephen Graham in Channel 4’s hard-hitting drama Help. The one-off drama showed the challenges faced by care homes during the coronavirus pandemic, with Jodie playing a young care worker called Sarah.

In May 2022, Jodie received a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress for her performance in the drama.

At first glance

In October 2021, Jodie confirmed that she would be making her West End debut, playing a criminal lawyer in Suzie Miller’s new play Prima Facie, which is set to run in 2022.

In June 2022, it was announced that the show would be coming to Broadway in 2023, with Jodie writing on social media: “I am so honoured to play a part in telling this story and beyond thrilled that next week is not the end. It means the world to see and hear so many positive responses from you. Thank you to everyone who has supported the show and a special thank you to those who have travelled thousands of miles, now it’s our turn. Love you Tess, we’re going to BROADWAY!” (sic) In March 2023, Jodie won an Olivier Award for her performance in the play, in the Best Actress category.

In June 2024, Jodie confirmed that NT’s live recording of the London West End performance of Prima Facie would be screened worldwide in cinemas from 12 September.

Jodie landed a new film role in the apocalyptic thriller The End We Start From. In September 2022, she shared a first-look photo of herself from the film and wrote: “Meet Zeb and Woman”. The film was then released in theaters in January 2024. Jodie stars alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the film, where she also served as an executive producer.

In June 2024, the film will be released on the Netflix streaming platform.

The bikers

Jodie appears in The Bikeriders, where she plays Kathy alongside Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. The film was released in theaters on June 21, 2024, and is based on the book of the same name, which describes the lives of members of a Chicago motorcycle club.

I’ll put my hands up, I like to do a little pre-recording, I don’t have to sing anything live. We’ll do a little pre-recording in the studio, and then I’ll go mime it. That’s where I feel comfortable.”
