Google Messages redesigns the look of RCS photos with text captions

In a small but nice redesign, Google Messages is changing how photos sent with text appear in RCS conversations.

Currently, sending an image and an RCS message at the same time will see the text appear above the photo. In SMS conversations, the photo appears first, followed by the text below.

Google Messages is currently testing a new design for RCS messages (and probably SMS too). The image will appear first with the message attached by curving the bottom corners of the text bubble to match the top of the photo.

RCS (current) vs RCS (new, u/seeareeff)

This merge looks better, and placing the text below it makes a lot more sense, especially in the context of the captions. The current design has always looked quite strange, so much so that you might want to see each element separately.

It matches the design of other messaging apps, which make adding an image caption a more explicit action.

So far, one user has reported this photo overhaul in Google Messages.
