INSIDE THE VILLAGE: Meet the ‘Super Seniors’ Who Never Seem to Age

This week on the podcast: Why do some people over 80 have the memory of someone 20 or 30 years younger? Have they discovered the fountain of youth? We asked Canada’s leading expert

Welcome back to Inside the villagea one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local and no topic is taboo.

In this week’s episode: What is a super-age person? And how do you become one?

To be honest, we hadn’t even heard of the term until a few days ago, but we wanted to know more, so we reached out to the right person: Dr. Angela Roberts, a professor at Western University who also happens to be the Canadian research lead on an international study examining super-seniors.

It turns out that a super-old person is a person 80 or older who has the memory of someone 20 or 30 years younger. Roberts and his colleagues have actually identified a number of them, and they’re learning more every day about what makes these special people tick.

Their findings could help us live longer and more pleasant lives.

Spoiler alert: Since Roberts is an expert on aging, we couldn’t end the interview without asking her thoughts on Joe Biden’s performance in the U.S. presidential debate. Her answer might surprise you.

Hosted by Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, Editor-in-Chief of Village Media, Inside the village is a current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from our Ontario newsroom chain. Produced by Derek Turner, the program also explores broader issues that impact people across the province.
