NEET-UG: 56 students move Supreme Court opposing re-test, cancellation of results

New Delhi,UPDATED: July 5, 2024 4:18 PM IST

Just before the July 8 hearing before the Supreme Court on the batch of petitions demanding a retest of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) and cancellation of the exam due to allegations of leak of documents, 56 Gujarat-based medical students have filed a fresh petition opposing these demands.

The petitioners requested that medical admissions be continued based on current results, excluding those who adopted unfair means during the examinationThey urged the Supreme Court to issue a writ of mandamus to the National Testing Agency (NTA), restraining it from cancelling the NEET-UG 2024 exams in light of the hard work and time they invested to crack the exam.

“The Hon’ble Court may further direct the respondents not to conduct the NEET-UG 2024 again by cancelling the NEET-UG 2024 as it would not only be unreasonable and harsh on the honest and hardworking students but would also result in violation of the right to education and hence, violative of Article 14 of the Constitution of India, 1950,” the petition said.

The plea stated that the students had dedicated themselves fully towards their dream of becoming doctors after hard and consistent work of more than three to four years and had cracked the NEET-UG 2024 examination. Therefore, the examination should not be cancelled.

The petitioners expressed concern that they would face considerable hardship if they had to retake the NEET-UG 2024 test. They argued that a re-conduct of NEET would not meet the test of reasonableness and would be unfair to the petitioners, who have succeeded through their hard work and sincerity.
