US President Joe Biden has once again found himself at the centre of a media frenzy after a series of verbal missteps during Independence Day celebrations. In one notable gaffe, Biden declared himself “proud to be the first black woman to serve with a black president,” confusing himself with Kamala Harris, the current vice president.

The gaffe comes just a week after Biden’s debate with Donald Trump, which has raised many questions about his political viability. In an interview on Philadelphia’s Wurd radio station, Biden had wanted to highlight Harris’ historic role, but ended up blurring the lines about his own tenure as vice president under Barack Obama.

“By the way, I’m proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, the first Black woman… to serve with a Black president,” Biden said.

The president’s verbal blunders continued during his appearance on The Earl Ingram Show, a program aimed at black listeners in Wisconsin but broadcast nationwide. When he raised the importance of the vote, Biden responded in a muddled manner, apparently referring to the Supreme Court’s recent decision granting Trump significant immunity from prosecution. He said: “You need somebody, somebody to make sure that — the Supreme Court just made a decision, by the way, that threatens the American principle that we have no kings in America. No one is above the law.”

Adding to the controversy, Biden, 81, misspoke again while addressing military families on the South Lawn of the White House. During his four-minute speech, he said, “I’m not going anywhere,” but awkwardly referred to Trump as “one of our colleagues.”

The missteps have intensified pressure on Biden to consider dropping out of the Democratic presidential race, especially as doubts grow about his ability to defeat Trump in November’s election. Critics say Biden’s propensity for verbal slips is nothing new, but his recent performance in a 90-minute debate, in which he often appeared disoriented, has heightened concerns. Although he admitted to supporters that he no longer speaks as “fluently” as he once did, the debate has raised new questions about his ability to serve another term. Opinion polls show a significant drop in support for Biden after the debate, while confidence in Harris has increased.

In an attempt to rally support, Biden spoke to Democratic governors on Wednesday, saying he was ready to take on Trump and asking for their support. Still, the New York Times reported that Biden told them he needed more rest and fewer hours, suggesting he should avoid events after 8 p.m.

Although a few Democratic lawmakers have publicly called for Biden to step down, most have refrained from making any statements. There is speculation that many are waiting for detailed polls of key states, expected in the coming days, to gauge support for Biden before making any public statements.
