Center Opposes Overturning ‘Tainted’ Review in Supreme Court; Here’s Why

NEET UG 2024 Make-up Exam Update: The Central government on Friday opposed the cancellation of the NEET UG 2024 exam before the Supreme Court, saying it would jeopardize the future of lakhs of honest candidates. In its affidavit before the Supreme Court, the Union government said it would not be rational to cancel the exam in its entirety as it would impact candidates who honestly attempted the NEET-UG 2024. The filing further said that the CBI has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities of the leaked papers and others.

This came as students and parents remained optimistic about a re-examination of the corruption-marred NEET-UG 2024 exam. Large-scale protests erupted after irregularities in the coveted medical entrance exam surfaced after the results were declared on June 4. The NEET controversy reached the parliament, with the opposition cornering the government on the issues of NEET-UG, NEET-PG and UGC-NET.

Why is the Centre opposed to the Re-NEET programme?

While justifying its opposition to Re-NEET, the central government said that since there was no evidence of large-scale breach of confidentiality taking place during NEET-UG 2024, scrapping the exam in its entirety would not be rational. It further said that the Union of India was committed to “conducting all competitive examinations in a fair and transparent manner”.
