No suspects arrested in July 4 shooting that left 7-year-old boy dead

TAMPA, FloridaThe family of a little boy hit by a stray bullet a year ago is still searching for answers.

Yitzian Torres was killed last year on July 4 by a gunman who pulled out a gun on Ben T. Davis Beach in Tampa. The shooter has not been arrested, but Tampa police have increased the reward for information leading to an arrest.

“I can’t believe it’s been a year and a year since justice was served,” said Marisol Ayala Hernandez, Yitzian’s grandmother.

The boy was at Ben T. Davis Beach that night with his grandfather to watch the fireworks. However, police said that around 8:30 p.m., two men were fighting over a jet ski and at least one of them pulled out a gun.

A stray bullet hit Yitzian as his grandfather tried to shield him from gunfire.

“This is the consequence of all these irresponsible people who do this,” said his grandfather, Juan Carlos Hernandez. “And we should have been there. All the families together, to celebrate all this.”

On July 4, the family desperately tries to encourage those who were there that night to finally tell what they know.

“We have pictures, toys,” Marisol Hernandez said. “I have a lot of things of his at home. And I’m going to keep them, because he’s in my heart all the time.”

Tulsa police have dubbed Yitzian the “King of Hearts” in their cold case card game. They hope it will tug on heartstrings and give them the information they need.

“Even if you have information that you’re not sure of its value, share it with us,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw.

Yitzian’s family said solving the case would give them some semblance of a life back. Tulsa police are now offering a $25,000 reward, but that’s nothing compared to what they’ve lost.

“We’re trying to be strong, but I know if he was here, we could have been on the beach and doing his fireworks and all that,” Marisol Hernandez said. “We’re just doing it so that justice can be served.”
