Members of the Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation Hawks have arrested a man for drug trafficking; drugs worth R88,500 were found at his home.

Chinonso Okafor (34) appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The Hawks said their members had received information about a suspect who was supplying drugs to drug traffickers around Pietermaritzburg.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said observations were made around the suspect’s residence and he was seen leaving the residence.

Members approached him and a search was conducted, he said.

“He handed over small bags of cocaine to the police which appeared to contain cocaine powder. The police took him to his home to check his passport and address. When they arrived at his apartment, the police found more drugs with a street value of R88 500,” Mr Mhlongo said.

Mhlongo said Okafor was arrested and charged with drug trafficking.

“He appeared briefly before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court (Thursday) and was remanded in custody.”

“The matter has been adjourned to July 11, 2024 for bail application,” he said.
