Good Morning Britain descends into chaos after presenter’s phone rings live | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Susanna Reid and Ed Balls spoke via video link to presenter Jonathan Swain who was reporting from Clacton-on-Sea on Nigel Farage winning the Essex constituency in eastern England with 21,225 votes, ousting Conservative incumbent Giles Watling.

The leader of the British Reform Party is now a Member of Parliament, having only taken over as party leader four weeks ago.

“This morning Labour won a landslide victory, the Tories were decimated and the Reformers took power,” Susanna explained. “Nigel Farage finally became an MP and wasted no time in saying: ‘We are coming for Labour. This is just the first step which will astound you all.’” Excerpts from his victory speech.

She continued: “Jonathan Swain has been following him from Clacton.”

The correspondent reported on Nigel’s victory, before commenting: “I’m sure he’s had a few pints. He’s back in London and is due to hold a press conference in central London with his four elected MPs.

“People have been walking past me to chat to me and people who voted for Nigel Farage have been coming up to me and saying, ‘Where is he? I want to go and congratulate him – it’s a tough thing to tell them. He’s back in London now, so will voters see Nigel Farage…’

He was immediately interrupted by the sound of his phone ringing loudly.

“It was my phone… not Nigel,” he remarked. “Nigel Farage’s rollercoaster of life as an MP has only just begun. So let’s hold on tight.”

Susanna asked, “Jonathan, who was on the phone?”

He replied: “I didn’t look. I don’t dare look. It certainly wasn’t Nigel Farage. I’ve been trying to get him to talk to me all morning but he’s gone.”

“I think he was too tired to speak, but I’m sure when he opens his mouth at lunchtime in Westminster he will have plenty to say.”

Ed joked: “Check your phone, Jonathan, because it might be Keir Starmer ringing to see if Lord Swain wants to stand as Minister of Broadcasting for Culture and Sport.

“So, check your phone just in case, you never know.”
