Inauguration of the Macro study room in Rome, Gualtieri: “A new space for young people”

The Macro study room opens: a new space dedicated to young people at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome. Two points dedicated to public reading have been set up inside the museum, the first through the development of the cafeteria in the new wing of the museum and the second through the reopening of the room of the Visual Arts Research and Documentation Center in the historic wing of via Reggio Emilia. The two study rooms were inaugurated by the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri and by the Councilor for Culture Miguel Gotor. The double configuration, organized respectively by the Special Agency Palaexpo and the Capitoline Superintendence of Cultural Heritage following the guidelines of the Department of Culture, was realized in 2024 with the aim of providing the Museum with a permanent and widespread public reading service. “The Macro is one of the most important exhibition spaces in the city, which we want to relaunch and open up more and more to young people: it is a new space for them – says Mayor Gualtieri -. This museum, born from a design competition, has a natural vocation for new generations due to its proximity to schools and universities. The idea of offering a permanent study room inside, which develops into two separate spaces, responds to our vision of accessibility to culture. Our ambition is that through the offer of new services, museums like other cultural institutions become increasingly lively and welcoming spaces for all.

“In Rome there is a lack of study rooms for group study – added Gualtieri -. We are in the district with the highest density of high schools and universities, it is a wonderful place and we will move forward to open and group others. Here, at the Macro, there are 48 places”. The new headquarters, which is located in an exhibition center already very popular with the new generations and in a territorial context particularly rich in high schools and universities, is a complementary space to the nearby European Library and responds to a plan aimed at encouraging the use of the most significant cultural institutions of the Capitol intended for young people. With 48 study spaces, a short distance from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and the Luiss “Guido Carli” as well as the Tasso, Righi, Giulio Cesare and Avogadro high schools, the new headquarters will create an important socio-cultural point of reference within the Municipality of Rome II, aimed at the inhabitants of the district but also at students, off-site and not, who live in the neighboring districts.

The new study room, like the Museum, is accessible every day except Monday and will be open from 12:00 to 19:00 from Tuesday to Friday and from 10:00 to 19:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday. The intervention follows the inaugurations of the study rooms of Palazzo Braschi, Centro Euclide, Montespaccato, Trionfale and Pelanda that have taken place in recent months and is part of the larger project to create an urban network of study rooms organized by the Department of Culture of Rome Capital, in order to provide the city with new meeting places for students and beyond. But that’s not all: the second study room of the Macro will have 14 seats in an evocative library environment.

“The second study room of the Macro has 14 seats. It was previously closed to the public and now it will be open to researchers. We are opening many study rooms in Rome to be able to study in a comfortable and suitable place, and also to spend a pleasant time”, concluded Mayor Gualtieri. Finally, the Councilor for Culture of Rome Capital, Miguel Gotor, was also satisfied: “As in the case of the Museum of Rome in Palazzo Braschi, at the Macro too we started by noting the presence of a documentation center open only to researchers and not to the public – said Gotor – . By recovering the rooms of the cafeteria, currently unused, and those of the reading room of the Crdav we have obtained a large space that can be permanently inhabited by students who had already spontaneously started to live the experience of the Museum by studying inside. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the special agency Palaexpo and the Superintendence of the Capitol and to all those who contributed to the opening of the new study room,” concluded the advisor.
