Amtrak Adds 33 Stops at Newark Airport to Meet Growing Demand

NEWARK, NJ — Amtrak is adding dozens of additional stops at Newark Liberty International Airport to help meet demand on one of the nation’s busiest transportation corridors, spokespeople announced this week.

According to Amtrak, Northeast Regional service will increase at Newark Airport to “better align with customer demand in the Northeast Corridor (NEC) and airline travel schedules.” The additions will include 33 additional weekly stops at the station throughout the morning, afternoon and evening, a 26 percent increase.

“We’ve heard from our customers who have asked for more and better-timed stops at Newark Airport, and we’re implementing these improvements based on their feedback,” said Fred Gazzolo, Amtrak’s vice president of business strategy and performance.

Charles Everett, director of aviation for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said the increased service comes at a good time: Passenger numbers are expected to hit record levels this summer.

“The additional Amtrak service will help meet demand and increase transit access to the airport, a key part of transforming Newark Airport into a modern, world-class gateway,” Everett said.

Amtrak also recently announced the addition of additional rail service throughout the NEC to meet growing customer demand.

According to a press release:

“These new schedules from both initiatives contribute to Amtrak’s ambitious goal of doubling annual ridership to 66 million by fiscal year 2040. Momentum has already begun with NEC ridership in the second quarter of fiscal year 2024 reaching 29 percent above pre-pandemic levels and Northeast region ridership increasing more than 33 percent compared to fiscal year 2019. The addition of service on the NEC also contributes to Amtrak’s sustainability goals to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.”
