Indian-born Rishi Sunak assumed the post of British Prime Minister after Liz Truss resigned in 2022 after serving 45 days in the post.

Based on current trends, it appears that Starmer will be the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, with the Labour Party securing a significant majority in the House of Commons.

Sunak said there was much to consider and learn from the “sobering verdict” delivered by British citizens.

Taking responsibility for his defeat, Britain’s first black prime minister said “I’m sorry” to the hard-working Conservative candidates who lost the battle.

“The Labour Party has won this general election and I called Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” he added.

Ro Khanna hails Rishi Sunak for inspiring many

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Ro Khanna reacted to the UK election results and threw his support behind Sunak, saying that “you will not owe history an apology.”

Admitting to having “deep political disagreements” with Sunak, he said: “There is no denying that as the first leader of Indian origin of a Western democracy – of Britain, no less – you have inspired many others to be proud of their heritage and to serve.”

Earlier in the day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to Sunak for strengthening bilateral relations between India and the UK.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi extended his best wishes to Sunak, writing: “Thank you Rishi Sunak for your admirable leadership of the UK and active contribution to deepening India-UK ties during your tenure.”

On Diwali in October 2022, Sunak took over as Conservative Party leader, entering 10 Downing Street as the youngest prime minister in 210 years and the UK’s first non-white leader.

He has faced a difficult period, marked by galloping inflation, aggravated by former Prime Minister Truss’s mini-budget. Although he has managed to reduce inflation to some extent, his divided party has seen its opposition to the incumbents grow.
