German automotive spy photographers this week captured a never-before-seen wedge-shaped BMW prototype testing on a “dark airstrip,” our source said.

The prototype in question appears to have a similar design language to BMW’s Neue Klasse electric car concepts. So far, we’ve seen them officially in sedan and SUV form, but nothing in a more performance-focused two-door body style, yet.

“At first glance, the BMW Neue Klasse Coupe looks like a futuristic Buggy/Crossover with very long doors and perhaps a large glass dome over the cabin,” the spy photographer said. “But upon closer inspection, you can clearly see the face of the Neue Klasse at the front. Even though the headlights and the illuminated grille are still camouflaged, the BMW front end is unmistakable.”

This prototype appears to have a very angular design, with lots of flat lines and minimal overhang at the front and rear. The closest production car to this in BMW’s recent history would be the i8, but that two-door coupe’s design had more rounded edges and curves than what we see here.

The spy photographer also noted that this test mule appears to have four independent wheel hub motors. BMW has invested in Munich-based tech company DeepDrive, which is developing this propulsion technology, combined with an integrated braking system, in partnership with Continental. There’s a good chance that’s exactly what we’re looking at here, given that there’s no sign of a brake caliper on this car. So, in case there was any confusion, this is definitely an electric vehicle we’re looking at here.

Judging by the neat appearance and legality of this test model, there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the near future. For now, though, let us know what you think of this thing in the comments below.
