Serena Williams reflects on her ‘favorite’ look she wears on the court.

During his appearance on the Thursday, July 4 episode of The hottestThe 42-year-old took a look back at some of her most iconic tennis outfits. When host Sean Evans showed Williams a photo from the 2004 US Open — where she wore a denim skirt and a studded black Nike tank top — she explained that her look was inspired by fellow countryman Andre Agassi.

“That’s my favorite moment,” she said. “One of the most iconic moments in tennis for me is when Andre Agassi wore jean shorts. I was like, ‘How do you do that?’”

Agassi wore denim shorts, which he paired with a white polo shirt, at the 1989 US Open in Flushing Meadows Park, New York.

Williams continued: “I said, ‘It could be jeans, I’ll wear jeans on the field.’ And they said, ‘No, we’re going to make it into a fabric that actually works.’ And so it was a modern version of what Andre had actually done. It was literally one of my favorite outfits of all time.”

Evans discussed other memorable tennis outfits from Williams, including the brown and lilac tutu dress she wore to the 2018 US Open. The eye-catching look was a collaboration between Nike and the late Virgil Abloh of Off-White.

“It was literally one of my favorite dresses of all time,” she told Evans. “I love tutus, I love ballet, I love dancing. I love that feminine look. It was exactly what I wanted, so much so that I can’t… I remember him designing it and I was like, ‘I can’t believe I never thought of that before. Seriously, Virgil?’”

Williams had previously spoken glowingly about the dress in a 2020 interview with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, in which she also shared that she always wears the dress off the pitch.

“I find it really fun to have fun with fashion and in my sport I have a great opportunity to play in something really crazy and really fun and really express myself,” she said. “Most people only see me on the field.”
