KEARNEY, Neb. — The shape of Kearney Catholic’s new Miles Field complex is beginning to take shape.

The school broke ground on the $6.8 million renovation project in November, with construction crews removing trees on the north side, dismantling bleachers and laying out the new eight-lane track.

Principal Matt Rogers said on ESPN Tri-Cities’ The Doug & Daddy Show that he looks forward to having a facility that is representative of Kearney Catholic’s success.

“All the work that the athletes and the artists have put in, our coaches, all that,” Rogers said. “We’re excited to have a facility that’s really going to match that and what’s going on at our school as well.”

Rogers expects crews to pour concrete for the track next week.

He said the wet spring has delayed construction slightly. He is currently working out the details so the Stars can play their first home game at UNK and hopes to have the new field ready for the team’s second home game on Sept. 20.

The Kearney Catholic Foundation is still seeking to raise $1.9 million to fully fund the project.

Rogers also announced that the school plans to develop a Holy Family prayer garden at the entrance to the complex. It will include a seven-foot-tall sculpture of the Holy Family.

“It symbolizes the past work that our families have put into this space and hopefully the future celebrations that will take place on this field,” Rogers said. “It just celebrates family and celebrates the spirit of Kearney Catholic.”
