“We don’t need men to survive”

“We don’t need men to survive”

Singer-songwriter SZA recently sat down with British Vogue to discuss the gender gap that affects music festival lineups. The 27-year-old advised women to embrace their “feminine energy” because men don’t validate their existence.

The Grammy-nominated singer has been touring since the release of her album, Ctrl, was released in June 2017. She also headlined the UK’s Lovebox festival in July and is set to headline Maryland’s Trillectro festival this September. However, despite being added to some music festivals, SZA spoke to the European publication about the gender gap at the events. The New Jersey native said she was “hopeful” that festivals would become more inclusive of female artists by 2022 after Pitchfork magazine reported that only 25% of artists booked for this year’s shows were women.

“The time is now,” the “Supermodel” singer said. “Feminine energy is dominant, whether you put it forward or not. Everybody can feel it. We don’t need men to survive or be valid members of society. Women are representing themselves in a new adult demographic that is probably quite threatening to what we’ve always known.”
