easyJet customers face chaos on their summer holidays as flights are cancelled at short notice

Summer holidays have been thrown into chaos after easyJet scrapped a raft of flights, with travellers told to “go home and wait” as the budget airline cancelled flights at the last minute.

Several flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow were cancelled on Thursday (June 27), the Daily Record reports. Bride-to-be Sarah Machete was about to leave for Edinburgh Airport to travel to Naples for her dream wedding when she was told her flight had been cancelled.

She said: “I was about to leave for Naples for our wedding. Then I got a message saying our flight had been cancelled. The only option I was given was Saturday, in two days.” Another passenger booked on the same flight reached out to X to express his frustration. He wrote: “easyJet cancelled our flight from Edinburgh to Naples and rebooked our flight, costing us almost two days of holiday. Why didn’t we book another airline to fly to Naples today?”

Guy Houston had his flight to Tunisia cancelled 65 minutes before take-off at Glasgow Airport. He said he had booked a package holiday with his wife and daughter to kick off their summer holiday – but “the whole trip was cancelled” because no other flights could be found. “We arrived at Glasgow Airport at 5am and there were passengers waiting,” he said. “The airport staff were telling us to check the easyJet app and no one would talk to us.”

“There were no easyJet staff on site to help us. When we got home I got an email saying they couldn’t provide another flight for the next two days so the whole holiday was cancelled. It’s the first day of the school summer holidays and this is what families are facing. It’s terrible. I feel like they’ve just washed their hands of us.” He claimed an easyJet customer service call centre worker said the flight had been cancelled because of storms affecting UK flights and it was “out of their control”.

Guy continued: “The airline said we would get a refund but there was no mention of compensation. We booked this holiday months ago and got a good deal. I have lost thousands of pounds, it will be difficult to rebook. I am desperate to find another solution for us but we only have a certain amount of holiday booked. I am not going to rebook with them.”

The easyJet website says the cancellations are due to an issue with air traffic control. A spokesperson for the airline said: “We are very sorry that due to the impact of air traffic control restrictions caused by yesterday’s poor weather conditions, which prevented this flight from operating and no suitable replacement flights were available, we have had to cancel this customer’s holiday at short notice. We have contacted our customer to apologise and confirm that we have issued a full refund.”
