Michigan State’s Coen Carr is ready to play any position he’s needed

Michigan State sophomore forward Coen Carr is another returning player this upcoming season who should make a bigger impact.

With his versatility, Carr could be called upon to play multiple positions, a task he became accustomed to during his first season with the Spartans.

“I’m ready for it. I had to do it last year, learn two different positions,” Carr said on opening night of the 2024 Moneyball Pro-Am last week. “At the beginning of the year I was at the 3, then in the middle I moved to the 4. And by the end of the year I was back at the 3. So just adjusting to things like that, yeah, I feel like I’m probably going to have to do it again this year.”

Carr doesn’t limit himself to positions, because he understands that the game has evolved beyond that.

“I’ll play whatever they want me to play, wherever I’m forced to play,” he said. “I’m not a fan of that kind of position, I feel like it’s positionless basketball, especially in the NBA. So yeah, I’m willing to play any game.”

Carr is known for his athleticism, as the team’s fan-favorite high-flying dunker, but he’s much more than that. This offseason, he’s been working on refining his game.

“I’m focusing on my shooting, for real,” Carr said. “I’m shooting and I’m handling the ball. I’m trying to be on the ball more often instead of sitting in that corner without the ball. I’m just trying to improve my game, for real, on all three levels. … And get stronger, too.”

Carr played in all 35 games for the Spartans in his freshman season, averaging 3.1 points per game and 1.8 rebounds while averaging 11.6 minutes per game.
