Thruway Authority Warns of Scam: Fake EZ Pass Messages Asking for Personal Information

The New York State Thruway Authority is warning people about a phishing scam in which scammers send a message about unpaid tolls and ask for personal information.

The Thruway Authority posted on social media: “EZ Pass or Tolls By Mail will NEVER email or contact you to ask for sensitive personal information such as your credit card number, social security number, usernames, passwords, etc.”

Phishers — who send fraudulent links to emails containing links to seemingly legitimate websites in an attempt to trick people into giving up sensitive information — may be looking for usernames and login information, passwords or PINs, credit card validation codes, debit or credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, or bank account and routing numbers, according to EZ Pass.

If someone contacts you saying they work for EZ Pass and are looking for personal information, do not provide the information, EZ Pass says: Call (800) 333-TOLL to report the call or ask the caller/sender to provide their own contact information so you can call them back.
