2026 Volkswagen Atlas filmed

2026 Volkswagen Atlas filmed

Volkswagen has been spotted testing a redesigned Atlas prototype, and the new mid-size SUV already appears to be in an advanced stage of development.

It is expected to debut next year as a 2026 model for the United States.

The current Atlas has been on the market since the 2018 model year and has averaged over 60,000 units per year in sales. Given the success it’s had, it’s unlikely that VW will make waves with the new model, and that’s exactly what seems to be the case, judging by the prototype.

Dimensions appear to be roughly the same between the two generations, and the SUVs also appear to have similar character lines, although they appear a little smoother on the new version. Finer details such as the lights and dashboard designs are hidden under camouflage gear, but elements such as the flush-fitting door handles and an elongated roof-mounted rear spoiler are clearly visible.

The prototype is for the three-row Atlas, but VW is also believed to be preparing a new generation of the two-row Atlas Cross Sport.

The new Atlas will likely be based on an updated version of the current-generation MQB platform. This updated platform is known as the MQB Evo and supports electrified powertrains, including plug-in hybrid configurations. However, it is not yet known whether electrification is planned for the Atlas. The only powertrain at launch will likely be the 269-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 that was made standard for 2024.

Production for the United States is expected to take place at VW’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant, where the current generation is built. VW also builds the Atlas in China, where the SUV is known as the Teramont.
