4 Marvel Projects That Will Probably Be Canceled in 2024

4 Marvel Projects That Will Probably Be Canceled in 2024

Marvel Studios expanded its film franchise to the small screen when the Disney Plus streaming service presented the perfect opportunity to do so. As a result, Phase Four launched with multiple TV series, the very first of which earned the Marvel Cinematic Universe its first Emmy Awards (as well as a slew of nominations). Yes, the MCU’s shows made history.

Since then there have been many successes, but phases four and five have been less cohesive than the original three, with films such as Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: QuantumaniaAnd Wonders all underperforming (and not resonating as much with fans or critics) and Disney Plus shows such as Secret Invasion receiving the worst feedback of any Marvel project.

These unusual drops have forced Disney and Marvel to prioritize quality over quantity going forward, with the studios determined to do everything they can to ensure that every title on the horizon is both a critical and commercial success. It also unfortunately means that they will be more selective about which titles they greenlight going forward.

While rumors and reports are already suggesting that a number of Marvel TV shows could be renewed for a second season (in order to allow the franchise to create multi-season series instead of single-season miniseries), rumors are also circulating that a number of projects will likely be canceled (both in film and television). So, with the studio expected to reveal its full slate of Multiverse movies and series at San Diego Comic-Con and D23, let’s take a look at the projects that are unlikely to make the cut.

SHE-HULK: LAWYER, Marvel shows

She-Hulk: Lawyer propelled the MCU into the realm of full-fledged sitcoms and was critically acclaimed for it. Tatiana Maslany was praised for her hilarious and heartfelt performance while Marvel Studios was praised for trying something different, using the television format to produce a half-hour legal dramedy that worked as well as a superhero series.

Of all the shows Marvel has produced for Disney Plus, this is the one that could easily return for a second season. It could even return for nine more seasons if allowed; sitcoms have a long lifespan, and She-Hulk would have been perfectly at home among the current projects. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be happening now.

It’s been two years since the series ended, and Marvel has yet to give any definitive word on its future. Its star, however, gave a rather discouraging update to fans earlier this year, telling them that a second season was unlikely because the show “blew its budget and Disney said ‘no thanks!'”

As Marvel is expected to officially confirm which of its classic Disney Plus series will return for a second season (with Hawk Eye And Moon Knightand potentially even Ms. Marvel all the rumors about renewal announcements), the absence of She-Hulk will likely confirm that the studio won’t be pursuing another installment of this one. This certainly doesn’t rule out a return of the character in another MCU project (Jennifer Walters’ Jade Giant is already being talked about in the next two Avengers movies), but it’s extremely expensive to produce an entire series centered around a CGI Hulk, so it wouldn’t be too surprising if She-Hulk: Lawyer remains a unique mini-series.

Danai Gurira Cast as Okoye in Black Panther, Marvel Says

One of the most intriguing shows on Marvel’s calendar is the Black Panther A spinoff series centered on Okoye. Danai Gurira is set to reprise her role from the MCU films as the general of the Dora Milaje in a series that is rumored to delve into the character’s origins. Or at least, that was the case until new reports suggested it was shelved or even canceled.

A Marvel veteran Daniel Richtman Warner Bros. recently revealed that Marvel might be walking away from the project, which, as upsetting as it is, isn’t too surprising. There haven’t been any significant updates on the project since Danai Gurira confirmed it was true in January 2023 and it was Before Marvel has decided to make some changes.

If rumors that the studio is shifting its focus, particularly on the television front, are true, it may well invest more time, money and energy into current shows instead of trying to launch new ones. And with Okoye likely to have a spot in a potential third Black Panther film, a prequel focusing on his origins might have been deemed less necessary to the MCU’s multiverse saga than his current and/or future stories.

If the rumors that Kevin Feige will confirm Marvel’s TV lineup at D23 are true and Okoye isn’t mentioned, we should probably take that as official confirmation that the series isn’t moving forward.

Don Cheadle as James Rhodey Rhodes / War Machine in the MCU, Armor Wars, Marvel

Another project we haven’t heard about in too long is Armor Wars. Starring Don Cheadle as he reprises his iconic role as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, aka War Machine, in the MCU films, it was initially announced at Disney Investor Day in 2020 and, well, there haven’t been many promising updates on it since.

It was initially announced that it would be a Disney Plus series. After a period of no news, fans began to worry about its future, until it was confirmed at D23 in the summer of 2022 that it had been repackaged as a movie. And then everything went silent on the Armor Wars in front again.

A recent rumor indicated that Marvel was considering scrapping the movie altogether following its new era, but honestly, the better idea would be to bring it back to its original form as a TV series. There’s a good chance it’ll be a huge hit for Disney Plus, and that might be a better approach given Marvel’s unusually weaker year at the box office in 2023.

There is also the Secret Invasion debacle to reckon with, as that show’s huge reveal that Rhodey had been replaced by a Skrull at some point during the MCU timeline was reviled by audiences, making it difficult to know how Armor Wars There’s no way we can ever hope to undo the damage he’s done. A project will have to do that at some point, because this probably isn’t the last we’ll see of Rhodey, but will it be this one?

From Armor Wars was one of the original Multiverse projects confirmed by Marvel, fans are expecting it to be one of the mystery projects in Phase Six. If it’s not on the calendar when Kevin Feige reveals it (likely at San Diego Comic-Con), that could say a lot about the future of the series. Let’s hope it’s on the calendar!

ETERNALS 2, Marvel

You might look at this entry and think, “Wait, right? The Eternals 2 “already cancelled?” Well, no, it’s not. Not officially at least. But unfortunately, it looks like it will be.

While Eternals The film did well at the box office, but its big budget meant it had to do better. It was the first sign of weakness Marvel had ever experienced at the box office, and as a result, no sequel has been confirmed since its release nearly three years ago. In fact, there were early discussions of a sequel, but they have since died down, with mixed reviews and a generally lackluster response likely being the cause.

The one thing that has been abundant, however, is the rumors, the vast majority of which suggest that Marvel will not pursue a The Eternals 2 at any time in the foreseeable future. Marvel Insider Alex Perez It was recently reported that Marvel Studios had been developing a sequel, but that it was not currently in development as it was no longer a priority. This also confirms an earlier report from insider Daniel Richtman who claimed that the film was on hold due to the fact that even though Kevin Feige wants to make it, Disney CEO Bob Iger thinks it is a sure failure.

Given that Iger was reportedly the one who insisted that Marvel change its strategy after its recent shortcomings, it’s highly unlikely that The Eternals 2 will be made. And if Feige doesn’t announce it at San Diego Comic-Con, we can probably take this as official confirmation that the movie has been canceled. After all, the Eternals have been touted as major players in the multiverse saga, so if they don’t get to continue their story before that saga concludes, then it’s fair to wonder if Marvel will consider giving them another chance.
