Nintendo Begs You to Stop Creating Rule 34 — or Face Legal Action

Nintendo is no stranger to lawsuits, whether it’s demanding a ban on Smash tournaments or cracking down on the use of emulators. This time around, Nintendo is going after adult content inspired by Nintendo characters. Yep.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furakawa brought up Nintendo’s NSFW content at a recent shareholder meeting when someone asked what the company plans to do about inappropriate content that “poses the risk of harming the value of Nintendo’s intellectual property.” So, basically, that drawing of Peach you saw, well, a peach? Yeah, apparently that’s not allowed, according to Furakawa.

In order to ensure that customers “don’t feel uncomfortable,” Nintendo plans to take “appropriate action” against lewd content on Nintendo, including online artwork. It seems a bit extreme that Nintendo would actually crack down on every single photo of Yoshi licking unmentionable objects, Paulina barely covering her goombas, and Bowser wearing a leather jockstrap. Is it possible? Probably not. Still, draw that picture of Toad stuck you-know-where at your own risk—it could cost you.

Apparently, Furakawa does not believe that this kind of content “brings smiles through entertainment,” which is the company’s mission. Therefore, obscene content does not fit Nintendo’s goals.

Doesn’t this really make anyone smile? That’s debatable.

Nintendo isn’t shy about suing people. The company has implemented all sorts of wacky rules for Smash tournaments that go against eSports competitions, and recently filed a lawsuit against moderators. An emulator, Yuzu, also recently paid Nintendo $2.4 million for “piracy.” So changing Nintendo’s IPs and using them as you wish is clearly not always safe.
