Cow on the Moon? Shock and Awe for NASA’s Moonwalkers! | Science News

A Surprise Encounter on the Moon? A moment of shock and awe occurred for these NASA moonwalkers when they came across a cow.

Yes, these moonwalkers were going about their business, helping the American space agency NASA with its moon landing experiments, when they suddenly came across a cow! A real one! Whether they were more surprised or whether it was the cow is the only thing left to debate now!

To put things in perspective, there are no cows on the Moon. That’s a fact. That said, NASA has a plan that calls for its astronauts to land on the Moon in 2026. It will be the most significant manned mission by the American space agency since the Apollo missions were abandoned last century.

In order for NASA to land astronauts on the Moon, there are a number of tests that need to be done in a simulated environment here on Earth, and that’s what these astronauts, Andre Douglas and Kate Rubins, were doing when they were surprised by the arrival of the four-legged beast. The likelihood of anyone coming across a cow on the Moon is absolutely zero. Sure, there may be aliens out there, but humanity doesn’t know about it. And these aliens certainly didn’t announce their arrival.

NASA is conducting this simulation in Arizona, and astronauts regularly go on walks on the Moon wearing backpacks and mock-ups, but not pressurized space suits. These backpacks and mock-ups restrict movement like space suits and simulate the conditions astronauts will experience on the Moon.

The idea behind this lunar exercise is to collect as much data as possible to better equip the astronauts who will eventually be launched to the Moon. And that means conducting these exercises both day and night to better simulate conditions on the Moon.

NASA’s crewed moon landings will be part of the Artemis III mission, marking the first time a human has walked on the moon in more than 50 years.
