Grade 10 student collapses at school day after birthday, dies of ‘silent’ heart attack

Dausa:A 16-year-old student fainted at his school in Rajasthan’s Dausa district on Sunday, following which he was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, suspecting a “silent” heart attack as the cause.

Yatendra Upadhyay, a resident of Panditpura in Bandikui sub-division, fainted at Jyotiba Phule Secondary School in Barh Bishanpura. The school staff rushed the student to Bandikui sub-division hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Bandikui police station officer Prem Chand said Yatendra suffered a heart attack but the exact cause of death could be ascertained only after a post-mortem, to which the boy’s family members did not consent. Upadhyay was undergoing treatment for a heart ailment, the SHO said, adding that he had celebrated his birthday on July 5.

The hospital’s duty doctor, Pawan Jarwal, said, “The school staff had brought the boy to the hospital. There was no heartbeat when he was brought. We performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but in vain.” “His family members said he was suffering from a heart condition. They did not consent for a postmortem and this was reported to the police,” he said.

Police said the boy’s family members told them that they would perform his last rites at their native village in Alwar. According to the student’s family, about 3 years ago, the student suffered from a heart problem, due to which he was admitted to JK Lone Hospital for 15 days. Staff and students of the school said that like every day, Yatendra reached the school at 6.45 am on Saturday, but collapsed soon after.
