Maryland Team Announces $2.5 Million to Strengthen Medicaid and CHIP Services in Schools for Children

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), John Sarbanes (MD-03), Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), David Trone (MD-06), and Glenn Ivey (MD-04) today announced $2.5 million in funding from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to strengthen school-based health services for Maryland children.

Made available through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), the federal funds will be used to improve facilities, recruit health care providers and develop systems to further reinvest in increasing school-based health care offerings for students.

School-based health care provides children and adolescents—particularly those in underserved communities—with access to essential primary, preventive, mental, and behavioral health care in convenient, trusted environments, and has been shown to have positive impacts on student health and academic outcomes.

“Investing in the health and well-being of our children is investing in our future” lawmakers said. “The Maryland team has long fought for stronger and more expansive health benefits for children, including through Medicaid and CHIP, and this federal funding will help advance that mission.”
